Milan’s newRenaissance

For some time now,Milan has come back

to life. TodayMilan is undergoing a new

Renaissance that can be tangibly felt in the

air. Its citizens, who experience it every day,

are saying so renewed pride. And so are the

foreigners who have started coming back in

greater numbers. A rediscovered dynamism

that recalls the Lombardmetropolis of the

post-war era, the industrial and cultural

ferment of a city that has regained its self-

confidence in its own potential with respect

to other European capitals. Indeed, two of

the world’smost influential newspapers, the

NewYorkTimes and the Financial Times,

have both certified the splendor ofMilan in

recent months. For the foreign press, never

too kind in its coverage of the Bel Paese, the

Lombard capital is experiencing a newage

of humanism. The locomotive of ‘The Boot’

is here inMilan, betweenPiazzaCastello

and Isozaki’s tower. According to the

international media,Milan, long identified

as a gray industrial city, far from the artistic

splendor of Rome, Venice and Florence, is

today forging a new identity in the wake of

the redevelopment of entire urban areas,

such as PortaNuova, the newPiazzaGae

Aulenti and the Vertical Forest. The cultural

scene is dominated by the silos of Armani,

the Prada Foundation, the exhibitions

at PalazzoReale. Statistics confirm that

Milan is the return destination of the

young financial wiz kids who emigrated in

recent years to London or Paris, but also

a rediscovered center of interest formajor

foreign investors.Then there’s the Brera

quarter, the newDarsena connecting the

canals, and theMontenapoleone shopping

district, which has always been synonymous

with fashion around the world. In this

framework, Expowas a unique opportunity

to showcase the city.Wemet with themayor

ofMilan, Giuliano Pisapia on the day after

the closing of Expo to examine with him this

newfoundmomentum.

e dinamico. Milano, per il secondo anno

consecutivo, è stata nominata la città più
